Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA)
Whilst Behaviour Analysis is the scientific study of human behaviour, Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is all about the practical application of this science. So for a person who is struggling with an alcohol addiction, Behaviour Analysis will help them understand the reasons behind this behaviour and the triggers for it. ABA can then be used to help the person overcome their addiction, by developing a programme of rewards and consequences to enable this to happen. As with all unhealthy behaviours, a person gets some benefit from them. In the case of an alcohol addiction the 'rewards' of this may include:
• A means of escaping from the harsh reality of life.
• An excuse for illicit or illegal behaviours such as domestic violence or stealing.
• Friendship and support from other drinkers.
• An excuse to get out of certain obligations / duties ("I have a hangover so can't spend time with my children")
ABA will enable the individual to overcome the addiction and to derive satisfaction / personal reward from more healthy replacement behaviours.
